A happy she-foal running around March 30, 2018

The foal that was born last Thursday spends more and more time rushing around in the paddock. We already know that the newborn is a little girl. Our zoo has been keeping zebras since 1894, and the first Budapest zebra foal was born in 1930.

Visitors can see pups, chicks and growing baby animals in several locations in the Zoo. One of the youngest new-borns is the zebra foal that was born on 22 March, and fake rolex we already know that it is a little girl (in other words a she-foal). Although the baby cannot be seen during all opening hours, she can mostly be found in the paddock, weather permitting, accompanied by the mother, Romy, and Tina, another mare.

The she-foal obviously enjoys the paddock a lot: she romps and skips without a care in the world. When she gets tired and hungry, she runs back to her mummy to have a few sips of milk. From time to time she lies down but usually she is unable to stay still for long. The foal’s hair is worth some attention. It can be seen at first glance that the stripes of the foal are somewhat lighter in colour than those of adult animals. If we have a closer look, it also seems to be a lot fluffier. That is because zebras at this age wear their baby hair; in the first months their hair consists of less guard hair and more down hair.

The mother of the foal, Romy, was born in August 2008 in a small town in North Brabant in the Netherlands, in the Safaripark Beekse Bergen near Hilvarenbeek, and came to Budapest in 2010. She is an experienced mother, since her first offspring was born in 2015, and right at the beginning of January; Romy’s foal became the first new-born of that year. The father is named Zucchero and was born in July 2010 in the Safari de Peaugres in France and has been living in Budapest since 2012.

We have been keeping zebras in our Zoo since 1894, although during the 124 years that have passed it happened from time to time that no zebras were being kept. The first zebra foal in Budapest and in Hungary was born on 6 July 1930. Over time we have kept several of the three species and eight to ten different sub-species of zebra; we used to keep Wahlberg’s, Chapman’s, and even Grévy’s zebra in our zoo.

These days the public can see one of the sub-species of the plains zebra (Equus burchelli), Böhm’s zebra which is also known as Grant’s zebra (E. b. boehmi). In addition to the above-mentioned two adult animals, Zucchero and Romy, we have a third breeding animal, a mare called Tina. A foal was already born earlier from the mating of Tina and Zucchero.
