Pet Zoo on the Margaret Island

The pet zoo which is sometimes referred as deer-park, exists since 1950 but it is only part of the Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden since 2002. The pet zoo was in really bad condition and the city of Budapest has decided to renovate in 2002 and handed it over to the Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden for operation.

On one half of the territory you can find a fold for the fallow-deer, where beside the endemic pieces of cervids hares have a place to jump around too. With this mixture our aim was to evoke something from the past of the Margaret Island, from the age of the medieval chapel and convent gardens and deer-parks. As commonly known in medieval times this island was called as Insula Leporum „the island of rabbits".

On the other half of the pet zoo Waterfowls and other ornate and colourful birds can be found. Beside the White-cheeked Pintails(Anas bahamensis) Mandarin Ducks (Aix galericulata) and Carolina Ducks (Aix sponsa) Asian Silkies get the biggest attention from our visitors. In the heart of the whole complex is the stable for ponies, in which you can take a ride on bright sunny days. Further to the mentioned species a wide range of owls and birds of prey reside in the garden. These are all birds without exception which were severely injured but we managed to save them, nevertheless without human help they wouldn't be able to stay alive in the nature.
