The crowned crane chicks have grown a lot August 29, 2019

The grey crowned crane chicks are almost a month old. Mami and Papi are now teaching them what is edible and what is not. This species is endangered in its native country, so their breeding in the Zoo is also important from a conservation point of view.

We reported on the grey crowned crane chicks almost two weeks ago. The chicks hatched on July 2, so they will soon reach the age of one month. They have also grown and developed a lot in recent weeks. The parent couple, Mami and Papi, who have raised two dozen chicks, are well on the lookout for these three little ones. This diligence extends to all areas of life; these two slender-legged birds even chase away the carers if they feel they are too close to the little ones.

Of course, chicks do not go far from their parents, especially when feeding. This is when the little ones learn what adults can and cannot do; that is, what is worth pecking at, by watching adults. This can also be observed by our visitors as they walk towards the so-called Vulture Valley.

In this valley, we not only present Griffon vultures but also several other bird species, including crowned cranes. Other specimens of this same species may also be admired in the Savannah enclosure: the crowned cranes there are all Mami's and Papi's offspring that have grown up in the meanwhile. Of course, not all previous offspring remained in Budapest; many of them in the meantime moved to other zoos, such as to Zagreb in Croatia, Erfurt in Germany, Emmen in the Netherlands and Les Mathes Zoo in France. The descendants of Mami and Papi are thus present in many other European zoos, which is particularly important as the grey crowned crane is an endangered species, and its successful zoo breeding is of great importance from a conservation point of view.
