Lightdome 2 in the Biodome
Lightdome 2 in the Biodome

Following the great success of the Lightdome in March, the Budapest Zoo’s Biodome will once again host a light art exhibition for over a month from 6 November. The Light Dome 2 will showcase magical works by local and foreign artists. The central theme of the exhibition is nature, which, like light, covers a broad spectrum from the microbiological level to the cosmic, including human activities. Visitors can discover site-specific installations revealing the power and fragility of nature, either interactively or symbolically.

Program details

Within the architecturally unique and atmospheric Biodome, the creations of both local and international light artists come to life through hundreds of intelligent lights, projectors, and high-powered slide projectors, creating a truly unique light environment.

The light art exhibition, which lasts around one and a half hours, features site-specific light art and audiovisual installations specially designed for the Biodome. The works are not only unique but also provide a more captivating experience than any other similar exhibitions due to the special venue. A prime example is the three-million-liter giant aquarium originally designed for sharks, which itself becomes a magical light art piece. The goal of the artworks is to showcase the relationship between humans and nature from a new perspective. Some installations are interactive, allowing visitors to engage directly with light and space, while others take a symbolic approach, revealing the complex relationship between nature and men.

The Lightdome 2. project, created as an artistic initiative by COLLOC Productions (also responsible for organizing the INOTA contemporary audiovisual festival program) and Centrum Production, is joined by LaLuz Visuals, known for its monumental light art, and internationally renowned light artist Karl Kola. The acclaimed artists contributing to the LIGHTDOME installations have previously showcased their work at numerous international festivals with great success.

Visitor information

Lightdome 2 will be open to the public from 6 November to 8 December 2024, from 4:30 pm to 9:30pm. The doors will open at 4:30pm, and we recommend that visitors start the exhebition no later than 8:30pm to have sufficient time to explore before closing at 9:30 pm. On-site ticket sales close each night at 8:30 PM, and after that time, tickets will no longer be available for purchase on-site that day. The venue for Dome of Light 2 is the Biodome, which is part of the Zoo and has a different entrance from the Zoo's usual entrance, near the end of the Zoo Boulevard towards Hermina út, on the Zoo's Krt. 16. Tickets can be purchased online, via the Zoo's online ticketing platform or on site. Tickets can be purchased on-site from 6 November to 8 December 2024, every evening from 4:30 until 8:30.

For the convenience of our visitors, we recommend purchasing tickets in advance, either during the discounted presale period or throughout the exhibition dates. There will be two entry points: one fast-track lane for those who already have a ticket and another for on-the-spot ticket purchases.

The Lightdome 2 exhibition at the Biodome can be accessed easily by public transport via trolleybus 72, metro line M1, or tram line 1. The closest stops for trolleybus 72 are Kós Károly sétány towards Zugló station (Hermina út) or Bethesda utca/Széchenyi fürdő towards Orczy tér. For metro M1, exit at Széchenyi fürdő, and for tram line 1, use Kacsóh Pongrác út, then take the pedestrian underpass to the corner of Kacsóh Pongrác út and Állatkerti körút, just a few meters from the Biodome entrance. Further details on public transport options are available on the Budapest Transport Center (BKK) website.

For those arriving by car, we suggest using the "Parkoló Zoona" lot to the right of the Biodome entrance or paid parking spots nearby. Additional parking information is available online.

Capacity limit

The Biodome can accommodate a maximum of 2,000 visitors at a time. In case this capacity is reached, entry will be staggered based on exiting visitors. Ticket holders who have purchased in advance will be given priority at entry.

Additional information on tickets

We primarily recommend purchasing tickets online through the Zoo's website, where card payments are accepted. On-site ticket purchases are also available from 4:30 PM to 8:30 PM each night at the ticket kiosks by the Biodome entrance, where card, SZÉP card, and cash payments are accepted.

Visitors purchasing tickets in advance during the presale period, or outside of Lightdome 2’s regular hours, are encouraged to use the kiosks located at the Zoo's ticket offices. Purchased tickets are valid through December 8, 2024, and cannot be refunded.

Zoo memberships and general Zoo admission tickets do not apply to the LIGHTDOME 2 exhibition. Four types of discounts are available for children, students, adults over 65, and children under 2. No other discounts are valid for this event.

The program will proceed even in rainy weather. In the event of extreme weather or prolonged power outages, the exhibition will close, and announcements will be made on official online platforms by 3:00 PM on the day in question.
