Zoo news

Be well informed about life at the zoo!

As part of the anniversary year marking the 160th anniversary of the Zoo’s opening, we now look back at several decades of rabbit welfare at our Zoo, from raising awareness about responsible rabbit keeping to the practice—ended 18 years ago—of taking in rabbits after Easter.

Dr. Endre Sós, Director General of the Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden, received the Frim Jakab Memorial Medal in recognition of the Zoo’s long-standing commitment to supporting people with intellectual disabilities.

March 20 is World Frog and Amphibian Day, a good opportunity to draw attention to these animals. They are especially important to us: we not only work to protect them, but also aim to help our visitors learn about as many species as possible.

When the area of our Zoo was designated in 1864, it covered 18 hectares. Over the first nine decades, it gradually decreased to 10.8 hectares, then remained unchanged for more than fifty years. Only recently have we been able to acquire new areas, so today our grounds once again cover 18 hectares. These changes are linked to a series of eventful developments, which we present in this article.

The most popular way to support the Zoo is through the symbolic adoption of animals. Organized by the Zoo Foundation, thousands of people become honorary foster parents each year.

The Hungarian Bird Rescue Foundation was established by the Budapest Zoo in 2009. Every year, we save thousands of wild birds, small mammals, and reptiles from certain death. Hedgehogs burned in brush fires, birds fallen from nests, animals hit by cars or poisoned—all can count on us. More information about the rescue centre.

Modern zoos today are not only entertaining attractions, but also critically important centres for learning about and protecting wildlife, as well as key institutions for environmental education.

Pannon Park

Ready for the future!

The Pannon Park is the largest of the new developments at the Zoo. The almost 5-hectare show complex will be built entirely on land taken over from the redundant Amusement Park. The Pannon Park will be themed to evoke the world of the former Pannonian wilderness, with a unique visitor experience, cutting-edge zoo exhibit technology, innovative and forward-thinking architecture and technology.
