Endangered African penguins breed regularly in our zoo. Peti (or Péter), the youngest member of the colony hatched in mid-October. Zoo visitors will only be able to see this young penguin in a few weeks, so until then we can show Peti just in a photo as a preview.

Budapest Zoo & Botanical Garden is famous for its Nile hippopotamuses. Famous because of the long and rich tradition of hippo management and husbandry here, and also because of our hippos can bathe in medicinal thermal water.

It is well known among our visitors that we are not only a zoo, but also a botanical garden, with numerous interesting plant species. One of our most interesting botanical exhibits is the Japanese Garden that is established in the 1960s. The Bonsai pavilion is also located in this Japanese Garden together with the National Bonsai Collection.

In the Magic Mountain, the leaf cutter ants can be seen carrying leaves with true ant diligence to the mushroom garden deep in their home. These animals actually cultivate fungi, because unlike leaves, they are able to digest fungi. Our visitors can admire the entire process.

The most popular way to support the Zoo is through the symbolic adoption of animals. Organized by the Zoo Foundation, thousands of people become honorary foster parents each year.

The Hungarian Bird Rescue Foundation was established by the Budapest Zoo in 2009. Every year, we save thousands of wild birds, small mammals, and reptiles from certain death. Hedgehogs burned in brush fires, birds fallen from nests, animals hit by cars or poisoned—all can count on us. More information about the rescue centre.

Modern zoos today are not only entertaining attractions, but also critically important centres for learning about and protecting wildlife, as well as key institutions for environmental education.

Pannon Park

Ready for the future!

The Pannon Park is the largest of the new developments at the Zoo. The almost 5-hectare show complex will be built entirely on land taken over from the redundant Amusement Park. The Pannon Park will be themed to evoke the world of the former Pannonian wilderness, with a unique visitor experience, cutting-edge zoo exhibit technology, innovative and forward-thinking architecture and technology.
