A short film on the stem cell therapy treatment of our eldest gorilla October 13, 2023

In our latest short film, we present the stem cell therapy treatment of Liesel, our elderly gorilla, and the results so far.

At the end of August, we have already reported that we were the first in the world to use stem cell therapy to treat the arthritis of our oldest gorilla. Now, we present you the intervention and the result so far in a short film.

Liesel was born in 1977, she is a mother of three, what's more, she is already a grandmother and a great-grandmother as well. At her age, it is not a surprise that she has arthritis, which is more of a zoo problem since gorillas simply don't live that long in nature (not to mention that if a wild animal has such problems there is no veterinary help).
Naturally, we have been treating Liesel with anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving medications, but recently she underwent stem cell therapy as well. In veterinary science, this is the latest, most modern, cutting-edge option in the treatment of this type of problem, and its application shows that our Zoo belongs to the international forefront in this regard as well. Thanks to our collaboration with the University of Sheffield and StemcellX, we were able to help Liesel with the most advanced method available.
