Zoo news

Be well informed about life at the zoo!

02/02/2026

We are taking part in a seven-year conservation programme to protect and increase the population of the European ground squirrel living in the Pannonian region.

23/01/2026

Before the Second World War, and especially in the 19th century and the early 20th century, the Zoo welcomed visitors during the winter months not only with animal exhibits but also with ice-skating rinks and sledding hills. As part of our jubilee anniversary year, we are now recalling these winters of the past.

18/01/2026

In recent days, we have experienced particularly cold weather and heavy snowfall compared to what has become typical in recent winters. At times like this, many visitors wonder how the animals at our Zoo are coping and whether the snow and low temperatures might cause them problems. There is no need for concern, however, as we are well prepared even for severe winter conditions.

12/01/2026

The latest “census” data on the animals in our Zoo have arrived. According to these figures, we care for 7,452 individual animals belonging to 658 species, as well as 78 breeding groups, on a daily basis. We work with many declining species, and in 138 cases, conservation-focused zoo breeding is coordinated through international breeding programmes, in which our Zoo also takes part.

The most popular way to support the Zoo is through the symbolic adoption of animals. Organized by the Zoo Foundation, thousands of people become honorary foster parents each year.

The Hungarian Bird Rescue Foundation was established by the Budapest Zoo in 2009. Every year, we save thousands of wild birds, small mammals, and reptiles from certain death. Hedgehogs burned in brush fires, birds fallen from nests, animals hit by cars or poisoned—all can count on us. More information about the rescue centre.

Modern zoos today are not only entertaining attractions, but also critically important centres for learning about and protecting wildlife, as well as key institutions for environmental education.

Pannon Park

Ready for the future!

The Pannon Park is the largest of the new developments at the Zoo. The almost 5-hectare show complex will be built entirely on land taken over from the redundant Amusement Park. The Pannon Park will be themed to evoke the world of the former Pannonian wilderness, with a unique visitor experience, cutting-edge zoo exhibit technology, innovative and forward-thinking architecture and technology.
