Zoo news

Be well informed about life at the zoo!

In just over a month, we will once again hold the Day of Children with Disabilities, organized together with the National Federation of Associations for People with Intellectual Disabilities and Their Helpers. This will already be the thirty-third event of its kind. Besides this now traditional program, the Zoo also takes part in many other forms of social responsibility.

Visitors can now see the recently arrived female red panda in the enclosure, who is intended to be the future mate of our resident male, Bendegúz. The young panda came to us from a zoo in Germany.

We could say we didn’t know it was “impossible,” so we went ahead and did it — but in truth, we knew from the start it was possible. That’s why we decided to relocate a huge London plane tree, which has since remained the largest tree ever transplanted in Hungary.

Our Zoo is one of the oldest in the world: we first opened our gates to the public on 9 August 1866. This Saturday marked our 159th birthday. Alongside many different birthday programmes, of course, there was cake too!

The most popular way to support the Zoo is through the symbolic adoption of animals. Organized by the Zoo Foundation, thousands of people become honorary foster parents each year.

The Hungarian Bird Rescue Foundation was established by the Budapest Zoo in 2009. Every year, we save thousands of wild birds, small mammals, and reptiles from certain death. Hedgehogs burned in brush fires, birds fallen from nests, animals hit by cars or poisoned—all can count on us. More information about the rescue centre.

Modern zoos today are not only entertaining attractions, but also critically important centres for learning about and protecting wildlife, as well as key institutions for environmental education.

Pannon Park

Ready for the future!

The Pannon Park is the largest of the new developments at the Zoo. The almost 5-hectare show complex will be built entirely on land taken over from the redundant Amusement Park. The Pannon Park will be themed to evoke the world of the former Pannonian wilderness, with a unique visitor experience, cutting-edge zoo exhibit technology, innovative and forward-thinking architecture and technology.
