On June 30, our colleague István Czuczor received a commendation from the Mayor of Budapest. The award was presented in a formal ceremony at the inner courtyard of City Hall by Mayor Gergely Karácsony and Chief Notary Dr. Tamás Számadó. At the event, 41 employees were honored for their outstanding contributions to the functioning of the capital over many years or decades.

István Czuczor has been a key member of our Zoo’s team for over 46 years, working as a senior zookeeper. Throughout the decades, he has cared for many animals and always carried out his duties with great attention and expertise. He continues to expand his knowledge to this day in order to understand the needs of a wide range of species and to provide them with the most professional care possible.

His work often continues even after the Zoo’s gates close. As he lives in the on-site staff housing, he is responsible for receiving and managing the intake and quarantine of rescued or confiscated animals arriving outside regular opening hours.

In recognition of his excellent work, he was voted Employee of the Year by his colleagues in 2008. Ten years later, the then-director general of the Zoo awarded him the honorary title of Senior Zoo Specialist.

Although he is turning 65 this year, he does not plan to retire yet. As long as his health and capacity allow, he wishes to continue working at the Zoo — something we are truly glad about.
