20/03/2024

The Asian wild dogs have taken possession of their expanded enclosure. We have nearly two dozen individuals of this endangered species, which was made famous by Kipling, and most of them were born at our Zoo.

These animals from the Cuon alpinus species are also known as red dogs, or red wolves, and they have an international name, dhole. This name originates from the Kannada language spoken in southern India and gained global recognition thanks to Rudyard Kipling’s famous collection, The Jungle Book. Some of our visitors mistake these red-coated canines for foxes, but the wild dogs native to Asia are much more robust than our local red foxes and hunt in packs.

The Asian wild dogs are listed as endangered species on the IUCN Red List, and the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria coordinates their conservation through a breeding program, in which we participate. We have been highly successful, as our dholes have been breeding regularly for decades. The current pack consists of nearly two dozen animals, most of which were born right here in Budapest.
