Indigo was born on December 23, 2017, and is the fifth gorilla to have been born at the Budapest Zoo. As the youngest member of the five-strong gorilla group, she celebrated her seventh birthday today. In honor of the occasion, her keepers prepared a special platter of fruits and vegetables with the message “Indi 7” written on it. Additionally, they placed other delicious treats around the gorilla house, including coconuts filled with fruits and vegetables.

The Budapest Zoo has been home to gorillas since 1989, the year Indigo’s father, Golo, arrived. Over the years, five gorillas have been born at the zoo. Indigo, the youngest, remains in Budapest, while the others, now fully grown, reside in various zoos across Europe and the world, including Opole, Barcelona, Madrid, and even Shanghai.

As critically endangered western lowland gorillas, Indigo and her family are part of an international breeding program aimed at conserving and safeguarding the species. The program plays a crucial role in the global efforts to preserve these magnificent great apes.
