New Butterflies in the Butterfly Garden

24/06/2024

A few days ago, new butterflies arrived at the Butterfly Garden. In total, there are hundreds of individuals from 18 species, four of which are being seen for the first time this season. Our Butterfly Garden is a seasonal attraction during the summer and early autumn. This year, we opened the garden at the end of May.

Although insects are not always the most popular creatures within the public, the Butterfly Garden remains a much-loved attraction, open only during the summer and early autumn. This year, the Butterfly Garden opened at the end of May, featuring the colorful butterflies of tropical Central and South America.

We previously reported on the start of this year’s Butterfly Garden season, but it’s worth mentioning again because recently, new butterflies—or more precisely, new chrysalises—arrived. These chrysalises come from a butterfly farm in Costa Rica, where breeding butterflies not only provides economic benefits but also contributes to conservation efforts. The butterflies travel to us in their pupal stage, shipped by airplane, and upon arrival, the chrysalises are placed in a special cabinet where, if you’re lucky, you can watch the adult butterflies (imagoes) emerge from their cocoons.

The latest shipment includes individuals from 18 species, just like the previous one, but four of these species are new additions compared to those that arrived at the end of May. The attached photo shows these four newly introduced species.
