Bird photography enthusiasts are once again invited to compete in the “Birdo – Bird Photographer of the Year” contest, with entries being accepted until May 17, 2025. As the main sponsor of the Birdo competition, our Zoo will be represented by one of the jury members.

This year, at the 23rd Website of the Year competition, our Zoo’s website was nominated in three categories. We are proud to announce that it received special prizes in two of them: Culture and Tourism.

The giant hooded katydid is one of the giants of the insect world, with a wingspan that can exceed 25 centimetres. Native to New Guinea, this remarkable species has been living at the Zoo for three years, housed within the Magic Mountain inside the Great Rock.

It’s double birthday time for our golden takins! Bao, the older of the two calves born last year, is celebrating his first birthday today, and it’s also the birthday of his father, Janek, who turns seven.

Now that his quarantine is finally over, everyone can meet Ottó, our new male wolverine. We’ve been keeping this species at the zoo since 2015. Our previous male, Igor, has been replaced by this young animal as part of the European zoo breeding program.

At our exhibit, the Australian Trail, at least five of our red-necked, or Bennett’s kangaroos, are carrying joeys in their pouches. The older joeys even peek their heads out now and then.

We offer to our visitors a special discount on Friday, February 14, and on the following day, Saturday, February 15 on the occasion of Valentine’s Day. This means that two people can visit our Zoo for the price of one ticket.

No, we’re not talking about the legendary knight of the Round Table, but rather the giant Queensland grouper (Epinephelus lanceolatus) that resides in the main tank of the Shark School.

It has long been known that leaf – cutter ants cut pieces of fresh leaves and carry them into their underground nests. However, at our zoo, visitors can see what happens inside the nest as well.

Thanks to our supporters, the aviary for rescued birds of prey at the Margaret Island Mini Zoo has been renovated. The 1% personal income tax donations offered to our zoo were used for this important project, just as we had previously announced.

Our zoo is open to visitors every day of the year, including winter. While some animals prefer warmer weather, they have heated enclosures where visitors can still see them comfortably, even in the colder months.

Our zoo closed the past year with the highest visitor numbers of the last two decades. In 2024, the number of visitors exceeded 1.1 million, not including an additional 200,000 visitors to the Margaret Island Mini Zoo. Last year also saw several major upgrades, such as improvements to the enclosures for prairie dogs, wombats, and Asiatic wild dogs. Additionally, new animals arrived, and we successfully bred rare species, contributing to their conservation.
