The voting has ended, and the zebra foal born in mid-December has been named Zuhara. This Persian and Arabic-origin female name refers to the Evening Star but also means brightness and radiance—an excellent choice for this beautiful little animal!
Earlier, we reported on our website that a charming zebra foal was born at our zoo in December. The newcomer made its public debut at one week old, and it was soon confirmed that it was a female. Accordingly, we sought a suitable name for her. Our caretakers initially selected three potential names, and last week, we launched a public vote to decide the final name, which received thousands of votes.
Voting closed at midnight yesterday, and this morning, we tallied the results. Of the three options, Zahra received 25.9% of the votes, Zena 30.3%, and Zuhara won with 43.8%. Thus, the foal will bear the name Zuhara. This Persian and Arabic-origin name—sometimes written as Zuhura in Latin script—originally refers to the Evening Star, meaning Venus, but it also symbolizes brightness and radiance.
A huge thank you to everyone who participated in the voting!
