The Budapest Zoo & Botanical Garden celebrates its 160th anniversary in 2026. During the jubilee year we are preparing programs that help visitors rediscover the Zoo’s rich history. The photo exhibition titled 160 Years Told Through Pictures is one of the special elements of this anniversary year.
The photographs are placed throughout the Zoo, so visitors may come across them while walking along the usual paths. These rare archival images were hidden for a long time in albums and collections and are now becoming visible to the public again.
The photos show iconic locations, vanished details, former visitors and special moments. They tell not only the story of the animals and buildings, but also recall the atmosphere and human stories connected to the Zoo. The exhibition invites visitors on a journey through time and helps imagine what it might have been like to walk here at the turn of the 20th century, in the 1930s or even in the 1960s. These photographs are living memories that bring the past 160 years of the Zoo closer to us.
